28 Years and Counting: Why Africa Smiles Exists

Mar 30, 2026 | Our Story

We’re back from our annual shutdown, and I’ve been thinking.

Not just about inventory or product launches —although those are certainly coming—but about why Africa Smiles exists at all.

It started with a feeling

After university, I traveled for six years—hostels, trains, borders crossed. It was enriching in all the ways travel promises to be, offering new perspectives, different worlds. But towards the end, I missed family and friends. I felt unmoored. Purpose wasn’t something I could find in another city or another sunset.

So, I came home to South Africa.

Africa Smiles started in 1997 as an answer to that restlessness. I wanted to make beautiful things that mattered—that created work, kept traditional craft alive, offered something more than a transaction. Over the years we’ve become a family-run business, expanding beyond craft to fabric, cards, stickersall made in South Africa, all helping the local economy.

The Ecosystem of Traditional Craft

Patson, one of the skilled crafters at Africa Smiles, creating handcrafted wire and beadwork.

Twenty-eight years later, here’s what I’ve learned: This only works if all the pieces hold

· There is you: The retail partners who champion our ranges and give them a home on your shelves.

· There is us: The team working behind the scenes to coordinate the designs, manage the orders, and keep the cycle moving.

· There are the crafters: The hands in communities across South Africa actually making these authentic pieces.

· There is the customer: The person who discovers a piece on your shelves, takes it home, and feels that little spark of connection.

The crafters need consistent work because, without it, the infrastructure we’ve built together—the skills, the relationships, the livelihoods—all starts to crumble. Traditional craft doesn’t disappear loudly. It just stops being passed down.

At the same time, your customers need to connect with what we make. Without them wanting these pieces on your shelves, none of this works. It’s a circle. Everyone matters.

Here’s what’s changed

Last year we made the move to stop working through sales reps. Some of these relationships went back decades. We didn’t take this decision lightly.

But travel was getting harder for reps, and more of you were reaching out directly—emails, WhatsApp, late-night website orders. The world was shifting, and we needed to shift with it.

Going direct means better prices for you and a closer human connection with us. But we know some of you miss the face-to-face dealing with a sales rep. We’re still figuring out how to serve you better.

Looking Ahead: How We Serve You Better

Last year we introduced new order forms with your sales stats, trying to make ordering easier. Is it working? What would make the process smoother?

We’re constantly evolving www.africasmiles.co.za to make online ordering simpler for your business. And if you ever just need to talk something through, we’re a phone call away.

You are part of what keeps this whole thing alive. If there’s a way we can make your part easier, please tell us.

What’s happening now

We’ve been busy. We launched a large number of new products over the past couple of months—check out our our New Products page to to see what you might have missed.

And as usual, we have specials across every product category. Something there might be exactly what you were planning to order anyway. Have a look at the the Specials page.

Here’s to 2026. Let’s keep building this together.
