Product Information

Telephone Wire

Our telephone wire range can be separated into two sections, the distinction being the groups of African crafters that produce the items. The telephone wire used was originally taken from old telephone wires but is now specially produced for the crafters which has resulted in a much better variety of exciting colours.

Telephone Wire Weaving
The South African Zulu art of weaving brightly coloured baskets and bowls from telephone wire is a skill that stems from the traditional grass basket weaving. This handmade contemporary craft   started with the Zulu night watchmen who would weave discarded phone wire around their security sticks to keep themselves busy. Using the skills of grass basket weaving, the ladies then transformed this art into baskets and many other items. Keeping this tradition alive they have modernized colours and styles. Our range includes: bowls (small, medium and large), hand woven baskets, vases, colourful place mats, coaster sets, bangles and pencils holders.

Telephone Wire Craft
Our teams of wire & beadwork craftsmen combine the telephone wire on a wire shape to create a variety of brightly coloured items. Our range includes: keyrings, zip buddies, pencils, brooches, hair clips, crocodile clips, trophy heads, Christmas decorations, key holders, key hooks, placemats, coasters, bangles and fridge magnets.

The wire & beadwork craftsmen live and work in the urban areas, although the assembly and packaging is done at our business premises. Our crafters have many years experience in this art form and are able to produce beautiful, complex, unique designs. We are able to wholesale.

Due to the nature of the medium we are able to produce customized items whereby we design products to suit your particular market requirements. For customised work, minimum  quantities may apply.

Wire & Beadwork

This African craft is handmade by teams of local South African crafters and artists living and working in the urban areas of KwaZulu-Natal. The assembly and packaging is done at our business premises in Durban. Our crafters have many years of experience in this traditional form of the arts and crafts. They are able to produce beautiful handmade gifts using galvanized wire and glass beads.

Our varied range includes beaded souvenirs, mementos, gifts, key rings, key chains, fridge magnets, beaded animals, beaded pencils, candle holders, handmade bottle stoppers, trophy heads, table cloth weights, wine glass charms, bowls and Christmas decorations.

The process of hand making the beaded wire craft item begins with forming a wire framework shape. A colourful bead mix is threaded onto a thin wire and this is wound around the wire shape to create the finished product.

Due to the nature of the medium we are able to produce customized items whereby we design products to suit your particular market requirements. For customized work, minimum quantities may apply.

Zulu Beadwork

Zulu beadwork is a traditional skill that has been passed down from generation to generation. The handmade beadwork is unique in its patterns and colours, and historically was used as a means of conveying feelings and messages. It is often used in clothing and accessories for social events such as engagements and weddings. The glass beads were originally brought to Southern Africa by European traders who used them to barter for goods. Nowadays they are imported to support the local South African beadwork industry. The beadwork is generally done by tribal Zulu woman who work from their homes which enables them to combine their craft work with their normal routines eg looking after children, cooking, tending crops and other daily chores. Groups of Zulu woman gather and produce beadwork in a social and creative environment. The beadwork helps to support local communities as well as provides a creative outlet.
